Coding and Billing of a Telehealth Encounter

  • August 20, 2020

Starting with dates of service September 1, 2020 and after, telehealth services should return to correct coding and billing of a telehealth encounter with a patient using a telecommunications system. The billing of telehealth services during the current pandemic are outlined in the FAQ.

Correct coding of a telehealth encounter, whether via audio/video, telephone, or text, must include Place of Service (POS) code “02-Telehealth” and one of the following modifiers appended to any procedure code submitted:

    • 95 – Synchronous telemedicine service rendered via a real-time interactive audio and video telecommunications system
    • GT – Via interactive audio and video telecommunication systems
    • GQ – Via asynchronous telecommunications system
    • G0 – Telehealth services for diagnosis, evaluation, or treatment, of symptoms of an acute stroke

If the POS code doesn’t match the modifiers appended to the procedures, the line(s) will be denied for incorrect coding.

For more details on telehealth coding and billing, review the Telehealth/Telemedicine Services Payment Policy prior to September 1, 2020.
