Why it matters
Premera supports ordering providers with reliable information to help you guide your patients to cost-effective care.
Using an in-network lab—especially a featured lab—can help reduce cost variation and patient out-of-pocket costs, while supporting timely access to testing. Featuring select in-network providers also supports our affordability and access strategy
by making cost-effective options easier to identify during ordering and referral workflows.
What to do
When ordering or referring for lab services, consider a featured lab when clinically appropriate and help patients confirm benefits before testing.
- Confirm the lab is in-network for the member's plan.
- If you use standing order sets, review them periodically to avoid unintentional out-of-network routing.
- Remind patients that benefits and cost share vary by plan and may be impacted by deductible status.
Member choice
Members can choose any in-network lab provider. In-network benefits will apply to those choices.
Featured in-network independent lab option: Quest Diagnostics®
Quest Diagnostics is a featured in-network, independent, lab option within the Premera network with 39+ patient service centers in Washington, and more than 3,500 tests to support patient
care. Quest works with clinicians, patients, and health plans to provide laboratory insights that help inform diagnosis, treatment, and healthcare management, with a focus on convenient access and cost-effective testing services.
How to verify network status and benefits
- Use your standard eligibility and benefits workflow through Availity to confirm the member’s active coverage and network level.
- Confirm whether the specific lab location is in-network for the member’s plan.
- If the patient has questions about cost share, have them reference their member ID card or contact Customer Service.
- When clinically appropriate, select an in-network lab to help reduce patient out-of-pocket costs and avoid billing surprises.
Collaborate with us
Premera periodically assesses labs in our network to determine if they meet our criteria to be part of this program. Any lab that meets the criteria will be contacted to join. If you’re an independent lab provider and have questions about collaborating
with us, please contact Premera Provider Relations by email.
Affordability and access
Affordability, access, and the care experience are closely linked. Site of care and network participation can influence premium trends and patient out-of-pocket costs. Premera works with providers, employers, and policymakers to strengthen value while
maintaining reliable access to care. Featuring in-network options is one way we support cost-effective choices for you and your patients. Learn more about Coverage that Counts.
