End of the Public Health Emergency Brings Changes to Payment Policies

    In response to the recent notice from the federal government of the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) ending on May 11, 2023, the following payment policies are being updated:

    Effective with claim dates of service on and after July 8, 2023, the policy exceptions to allow payment for code 99072 - Additional supplies, materials, and clinical staff time over and above those usually included in an office visit or other non-facility service(s), when performed during a Public Health Emergency, as defined by law, due to respiratory-transmitted infectious disease (i.e., personal protective equipment or PPE) will end.

    Procedure code 99072 will no longer be reimbursed whether it is billed alone or with other services. Code 99072 will return to its original “Status Indicator B” classification and be subject to the policy criteria for “Status Indicator B” codes.

    COVID-19 vaccines and vaccine administration codes submitted with the revenue codes 0770/0771 will no longer be reimbursed effective with dates of service on and after July 8, 2023.
