Diabetic Retinopathy Screenings

Regular retinopathy screenings are important for patients with diabetes. If your patients are due for eye care, we encourage you to contact them and schedule an eye exam. If screening was already performed, was negative, and the patient isn’t due for a subsequent screening, you can report that to us. Follow the guidelines in the Quality Tip Sheet.

Beginning in September, we’ll offer additional assistance to help you ensure that patients with diabetes receive appropriate eye care. We’ll be contacting Medicare Advantage members who have diabetes and are due or overdue (based on claims data) for a retinopathy screening. A contracted vendor, HealPros, will contact customers to schedule and complete in-home eye exams to address the potential risk of retinopathy. We'll mail results from the in-home screenings to each customer and the customer's primary care provider.

This initiative is part of Premera's commitment to the quality standards outlined by the National Committee on Quality Assurance (NCQA). If you have any questions, email ProviderClinicalConsulting@Premera.com.
