Tackling Tough Decisions with Your Patients

  • February 16, 2018

Research shows the best health outcomes occur when patients have the right information to make informed decisions. We're collaborating with Healthwise to offer Shared Decision Making tools that help patients make important decisions about their care with their provider.

We introduced the tools to our members in January 2017 and are now promoting them widely to providers. The tools are easily accessible on the Premera website. Your patients might bring these decision aids and/or decision aid results with them to upcoming appointments.

At the core of the tools are decision aids designed to help patients understand options for complex care scenarios including cancer treatments, joint replacements, coronary artery disease, caesarian sections, and other health issues. View the decision aids.

Taking into account scientific evidence and the patient's personal preferences, values, and health goals, the decision aids help patients evaluate the benefits and potential drawbacks of different care options. They also encourage patients to make thoughtful care decisions and work closely with their provider/medical expert to support the best health outcome.

For example, a patient who's considering a knee replacement can use a decision aid to:

    • Compare surgery options, rehabilitation involvement, and recovery times
    • Assess and understand symptoms
    • Prioritize their health goals
    • Support a more meaningful, holistic conversation with their provider about the care decision
    • Understand future physical capabilities after surgery or other treatment approaches

While using the decision aids, patients can also rely on Premera's Compare Treatment Costs tool to support informed decisions.
