Starting January 1, 2019, Vitamin D supplements will no longer be on the preventive services list. Premera will still cover Vitamin D supplements as a pharmacy benefit, but patients may be responsible for some costs, determined by their health plan. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force determines which services health plans must cover in full as “preventive services” under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force withdrew its recommendation that Vitamin D supplementation be considered a preventive therapy due to lack of information supporting its use.
We’re encouraging our customers to speak with their provider about their current Vitamin D therapy as over-the-counter supplements may be less expensive and just as effective.
