Effective July 1, 2016, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) created a specific service code (S2085) for reporting colonoscopy consultation prior to a screening colonoscopy procedure. Through the end of 2016, Premera accepted the E&M codes CPT 99202 and 99212 for this procedure, when billed with the appropriate diagnosis code(s). Starting January 1, 2017 and beyond, only HCPCS code S0285 (colonoscopy consultation performed prior to a screening colonoscopy procedure) will be accepted for pre-screening consultations associated with preventive colonoscopy procedures.
