Coagulopathy: Medication-induced or Systemic?

  • April 1, 2021

It's important to consider whether a patient’s coagulopathy results from medication therapy or from a systemic issue. This confusion frequently leads to inaccurate diagnostic coding. If a patient’s chronic conditions are managed and treated with anti-coagulants, coagulation defects shouldn’t be coded. Improper coding can lead to inadequate continuity of care, an inaccurate risk score for your patient panel, and an incorrect permanent diagnostic record for your patient.

As part of our Premera Documentation and Coding Series for Providers, we’ve created a tip sheet to help clinicians understand and correct this common coding mistake. For more information visit the American Hospital Association’s Coding Clinic.
