What to Expect for a Smooth Surgery and Recovery

  • Knee or hip total joint replacement is major surgery that requires careful preparation, as well as dedication to your recovery, to help prevent complications and get you on your path to recovery as soon as possible.

For best results, the COE Program at Virginia Mason follows clinical guidelines for determining:

    • If knee or hip replacement is needed. This is based upon factors including x-ray results, pain level, and mobility.
    • Whether you're healthy enough for surgery. Your care team will evaluate your blood pressure, weight, nicotine use, and other factors that may need to be addressed before surgery.
    • Surgery and pain control. Virginia Mason follows proven guidelines to help provide the best possible results, including appropriate use of anesthesia and antibiotics.
    • The recovery process. You'll get help for a rapid recovery, including help transitioning care to your regular health care provider.

    Get started

Meet with your regular health care provider to find out more about knee or hip replacement and if it's right for you. Surgery is a big step, and one that's advised only after you've tried other treatments for at least 3 months, or as recommended by your provider. These may include a combination of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), strengthening exercises, physical therapy, and corticosteroid injections.
