Premera is adding preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP), a daily medicine to prevent HIV, to our preventive care benefits. This eliminates cost-sharing for members, making PrEP more affordable for your employees and their family members at a higher risk of HIV acquisition.

Premera will roll-out the benefit to preferred choice groups, dual choice groups, and small groups beginning on July 1, 2020, with all other non-grandfathered groups and individual plans receiving the benefit upon renewal. Customization options to opt-in early are available for national accounts and self-funded groups. Contact your account representative to learn more about opting in.

The addition of PrEP to our preventive care is in response to a new federal recommendation from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). Taken daily, PrEP (brand name Truvada) provides up to 99% protection against HIV infection. And with nearly 40,000 new diagnoses of HIV infection reported in the United States yearly, it has the potential to make a big impact in protecting the long-term health of your employees.
