Is this orange capsule the one you're taking for your heart? Or was that the white tablet? And were you supposed to take it twice a day or twice a week? Also, didn't someone mention grapefruit juice?
Keeping track of all your medications can sometimes seem like walking through a maze. To help you find your way, we offer tips from Diana Graalum, pharmacist and program manager of Premera's Medication Therapy Management (MTM) program.
Know why you're taking it
To make sure you're taking it correctly, you need to know the purpose of each medicine. What condition does it treat? What effect is it supposed to have? For example, if you have a heart attack, you may be prescribed a medication that often treats high blood pressure, even if your blood pressure is in the normal range. In this example, the medication is needed to reduce the workload on your heart. Be sure you understand why you're taking the drug before you consider stopping it.
Make a list of all your medications
Take a few minutes to write down all the medications you're taking. Include the name of the medication, what you're taking it for, and when and how you take it. You can do this on your own or log in to the member website at premera.com/ma and use the free online My Medications form. Use your list to monitor what to take when.
Make sure ALL your doctors know about ALL the medications you're taking
If you have multiple doctors, one doctor may not know what the others are prescribing. Show your medications list to each doctor, so you avoid drug interactions. The first of the year is a perfect time to schedule your free, enhanced Annual Wellness Visit. Your doctor can go over your medication list with you to make sure there are no conflicting or out-of-date prescriptions. Maybe there's a generic medication you can use that will be effective and save you money.
Take an inventory
It's important to discuss medications with your medical team. At the same time, you should take an inventory of the drugs you have at home. Compare your list of medications with what's in your medicine cabinet. Do you have everything you need? Are there medications you no longer need or shouldn't be taking? Are there expired drugs? For information about how to safely dispose of unused and expired medications, go to takebackyourmeds.org or at fda.gov search for Disposal of Unused Medicines.
Who can you ask?
For expert advice about a particular drug or potential interactions, your pharmacist is a great resource. They have the training and usually the time to answer your questions.
