• Premera Giving Guidelines

    At Premera, "We're here. We're with you" is more than a slogan. It's an ideal we strive to honor for the members, employers, physicians, healthcare providers and producers we serve. It also helps set the tone for our community involvement.

    At Premera we're committed not only to improving the health of our members, but we're also dedicated to making a difference in the communities we serve through our corporate philanthropy and community service program.

    Premera supports community programs, events and charities each year with financial and in-kind donations as well as volunteer time.

    We invite all eligible charitable organizations to submit requests for funding to Premera. We focus our giving criteria on key areas that have an impact on the health and well-being of people in our communities.

  • In order to address the common risk factors related to many of the major diseases and health conditions that have a large impact on the residents in our communities, Premera supports nonprofit organizations and programs that address wellness, with a specific focus on exercise and stress management.

    • We are interested in supporting action-oriented events and programs which focus on promoting wellness and preventing major health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
    • We are also interested in supporting initiatives which address the emotional and social well-being of community members and organizations which provide services to people with low and no income.
    • We generally do not make contributions to capital campaigns.

    To be eligible for consideration, proposals for donations must:

    • Be from organizations that are defined as exempt from taxation under Section 501(a) as organizations described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code; or a government agency or program, a public school or school district, but only if the contribution or gift is made for exclusively public purposes; and
    • Assist residents in the areas we serve in Alaska

    In addition, preference will be given to proposals that:

    • Focus on health or wellness, including exercise and stress management, as a means of addressing common risk factors and preventing such health conditions as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer;
    • Address issues of access to healthcare for the uninsured, low income and underserved within the areas served by Premera and/or;
    • Meet a special regional community-health need

    Premera is a corporate contributor to United Way. Proposals from individual agencies already funded by the United Way will be decided on a case-by-case basis, but in general will be given lower priority than proposals from other eligible organizations that are not already receiving United Way support.

    Premera funds are not used for charitable grants or contributions to:

    • Individuals
    • Organizations that are for profit
    • Arts organizations
    • Religious organizations, unless the gift is designated to an ongoing secular community service program sponsored by these organizations and does not propagate a belief in a specific faith. (The benefits of this gift must be available to the general public and not be limited to the organization's members. Examples of these types of programs are: food banks, shelters, homelessness projects, low-income health clinics.)
    • Organizations that discriminate against individuals based on age, gender, race, religion, ethnicity, disability or sexual orientation, or that discriminate against individuals on any impermissible basis, or which advocate a position contrary to established public policy.
