HEDIS Quality Measure: Adult Body Mass Index Assessment

  • June 20, 2019

When collecting documentation on height and weight in a patient’s medical record, don’t forget to calculate the patient’s body mass index (BMI). BMI is considered the most efficient and effective method for assessing excess body fat.

Careful monitoring of BMI can help you identify adults at risk for complications associated with obesity and provide focused advice and services to help them reach and maintain a healthier weight.

A Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS®) assesses adults ages 18-74 who had an outpatient visit in the past two years and had their BMI documented. A documented calculation of BMI is commonly overlooked, which prevents the documentation from meeting criteria for this measure.
