Managing High Cost Prescriptions

  • July 6, 2017

Because the high cost of prescription medications is a concern, we’ll be requiring pre-approval for most kits and combination packs, starting August 1, 2017.

    Why we’re making this change

Kits and combination packs typically inflate the cost of the package components, which often include a prescription medication, gloves, dressings, tape, or an alcohol wipe. The contents of the kits can usually be purchased separately at much lower costs.

Insurance plans don’t cover the kits’ over-the-counter components, which are less expensive when purchased separately. As an example, Livixil Pak (contains Lidocaine 2.5%, Prilocaine 2.5% cream, gloves and a covering) has a wholesale average price of $3,331.91. If prescribed separately, the Lidocaine 2.5%, Prilocaine 2.5% cream would cost an average of $153.27. That’s a savings of more than $3,000 for a patient!
