Keep the following tips in mind when submitting claims related to drugs or vaccines that are administered or supplied by providers in their offices.
When submitting electronic (ANSI 837P) or paper (CMS 1500) claims, remember to include a National Drug Code (NDC) number, an NDC unit/basis of measure, and NDC units. Note the appropriate drug HCPCS or CPT code on the same claim line.
Refer to the payment policy National Drug Code (NDC) Billing Guidelines-Professional Claims for instructions on where to enter an NDC code on an electronic claim (LOOP ID 2410) or on a paper claim (box 24A shaded portion).
Entering the NDC code in any other location doesn't work with claims systems. The information won't be saved. You'll also want to avoid entering the NDC code into box 19, as that field isn't designed to capture claims coding information.
